The average deathrate declined from 10.9per 1000 in 1950 to 7.1 per 1000 in 1994. In 1994 the elderly, that is 65 years and older, accounted for around 14.1% of the population compared to around 5.0% only in 1950. There is only around 1% non-japanese inhabitans, the vast majority of this are koreans
